Atom Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS)

Limedion - spektroskopieAAS is a very powerful quantitative method to determine traces of an element in a sample. The method is highly sensitive and allows even the detection of parts per billion of the element under investigation.

With AAS we measure and quantify samples for traces of elements.

The samples are atomized in a atomizer unit. The atomic steam is analysed optically. Special lamps (hollow cathode, or electrodeless discharge) are used for each element, emitting only the characteristic lines of this element. The light is aligned on a optical bench and interfuses the atomic steam where it is absorbed only by atoms of the same element. After a very short period of time the atoms return to their energetic ground state, emitting light of exactly the same wavelength than the incident light. AAS utilises, that this emission takes place into all spatial directions. The incident, aligned beam gets weakened. The amount of signal loss is compared with the loss of well known standard solutions measured and provides the quantity of the element of interest in the sample.

A very important part in AAS is the atomization process. Common types are flame AAS and graphite oven AAS, whereas both methods have different scopes. The graphite method is approximately 1000 times more sensitive than the flame method and needs only very small amounts of samples, but must be normally fine-tuned and adapted for each sample and matrix. The flame method on the other hand is fast and straight forward, but less senstive. At Limedion we use both methods, matched to the demands of our clients
