The creation of porous surfaces by ion beam treatment provides an extra amount of available space for medicine deposition on implants. Tribological properties, like friction or hardness can be also improved by ion beam techniques. The energy deposition takes place only in the first few surface layers, whereas the sample itself stays at almost room temperature which allows to use the technique for functionalizing polymer surfaces.
