Our emphasis in medical technology lays on the improvement of bio compatibility of implants by methods of surface coatings and surface modification.
The requirements on medical implants are very high because our body reacts very sensitive on all kinds of “intruders”. Thus implants have to show a very good bio-compatibility, so that the body doesn´t reject it as a debris but instead perfectly adopt it. Basic requirement to accomplish this, is to build up the implant out of proper materials which do not react toxic in the human body. The surface morphology of the implant is a very important property for achieving an optimal integration into the organism.
On this topic Limedion focuses its research works. It is our target to improve the compatibility of implants and to provide a mechanism for selective, time controlled disposal of medicine directly from the surface of the implant to improve the healing process. For this purpose we deposit bio-compatible coatings and change their surface morphologies. This process is often combined with a functionization of the surface. By special Porous structures created in special processes can e.g. serve as depots for medicine on an implant. One major requirement on those coatings is excellent adhesion to the substrate to avoid a partly delamination from the implant. Limedion could e.g. achieve very good adhesion results on sensitive implants like stents.
